Frequently Asked Questions
Whether you're navigating Australia's social media ban or simply want to prioritise your family's online safety, Spacetalk's safe-by-design approach is built for exactly this moment.
Can my child still message me on the Spacetalk App with the social media ban?
Yes. Spacetalk uses 4G cellular networks for calls, SMS and chat, just like a standard phone. Spacetalk is not a social media platform – there is no open feed, no public profiles and full parental controls. Your child does not need a social media account to stay in touch. They can message you, call grandparents and chat with their approved friends from their wearable or phone, all within a closed, parent-managed environment.
What happens if they need to use their Watch at school?
Spacetalk’s School Mode is designed for exactly that. You choose the times when the device is locked down for learning, so during class it cannot be used for messaging or other distractions. Your child can still be reached before and after school, and emergency calling remains available, helping families stay connected while respecting school rules and the new social media restrictions.
Is Spacetalk affected by the ban?
No. Because Spacetalk devices do not have an "open feed," algorithmic content, or access to the open web, they are safe, compliant, and exempt from the age restrictions. It is designed to be the safe alternative to the apps being banned.
Who can contact my child on their Spacetalk watch?
Only the people you approve. In the Spacetalk App you create and manage a safe contacts list. If a number or contact is not on that list, it cannot call or message your child and your child cannot call or message it. There are no friend requests from strangers and no public profiles, just a private circle chosen by you for your child’s safety and your peace of mind.
Is my child’s location and data being tracked or sold?
Spacetalk is built on a privacy-first approach. Location and personal data are used only so that core safety features such as GPS tracking and calling can work properly. We do not sell your data. Our data is stored securely on local servers.
Won’t they get bored without apps?
They may miss endless scrolling, but they will not miss out on connection or fun. Spacetalk is designed to support real-world childhood, not replace it. Your child can take photos and short videos, track their steps and activity, check in with simple “feelings” updates and stay in touch with family and approved friends. It keeps them connected and engaged while avoiding the addictive feeds and content that many parents are now choosing to step away from.
